 Try a Little Tenderness

Otis Redding-Try a Little Tenderness

Lately, I have been seeing posts on social media from GenX justifying sarcasm abased on how we were raised as children.  I cannot ascribe to this mindset.

Sarcasm

What does it mean and why does it matter? sarcasm etymology It literally means to "strip off the flesh."  Think back to one of your quick zingers.  If you are like me, then you are known for your Indiana Jones'-style whip-fast comebacks and one liners.  Although they maybe encouraged by those watching your roast someone else, they are meant to injure someone else.  Use sarcasm with a colleague and you can make them feel embarrassed at work.  Respond sarcastically to your children and you can make them feel small and insignificant.  How we speak to people indicates very much how we feel within ourselves.  No joy comes from tearing someone else down, and it shows our own damage in the process.

Humor that is predicated on diminishing someone else never plays well.  Instead, listen to Otis and "Try a Little Tenderness."
